Unit History
From the Beginning - Constituded and activated on November 3, 1944, assigned to Requel Sarthe, France.
- March 24, 1945 reorganized with HHD, A, B, C companies as railway security.
- Departed France for Germany September 4, 1945.
385th MP Battalion DUI
-
Originally, a Railway Security Battalion, the 385th, was first activated in France in 1944. During the war the 385th earned a battle streamer for the Rhineland Campaign of 1944-45. The battalion was part of the original US Army of Occupation in Germany, but was deactivated in 1948. In 1955, the 385th was reactivated as the 385th MP Battalion with the mission of supporting Seventh US Army.
The Mission after Arrival in Germany

Guards for railways in and around Munich.

In two months, they guarded 548 trains of 17,786 cars and traveled 110,000 miles.

No cars pilfered!

Renamed the 385th MP Service BN.

Companies included HHD, A, B, and C.

February 25, 1947, relieved from attachment and placed under PM. Continued to provide support on a “as needed basis.”

Officially inactivated November 1, 1948.
Born Again -
Re-designated on December 9, 1954 and allotted to regular Army.

January 7, 1955, per USAREUR general order 1, January 7, 1955 assigned to 7th U.S. Army in Boeblingen, Germany.

The BN, HHD and CO’s A, B, and C were relocated on 19 October 1955 to Wilkins Barracks, Kornwestheim under 7th Army.

Participated in various maneuvers and exercises throughout Germany including, Reforger I, Operation Free Play and many others.

Conducted law enforcement in Stuttgart area when not in field environment.
Reorganized

November 1964, Co C relocated from Wilkins Barracks, to Smiley Barracks, Karlshue, Germany.

July 21, 1966 385th MP BN along with A, and B were reassigned to the 15th MP BDE.
-
Co C, B, and 385th MP BN had Det’s in New Ulm.
-
Company’s A and B supported Stuttgart MP station.
Law Enforcement Mission

The 31st MP DET CDR was also the area PM for North Wurttemburg.

Elements were spread in various MP stations at Stuttgart, Heilbronn, Schwaebish Hall, Schwaebish Gmeund, Goeppingen, Crailsheim, Ulm, and Karlsruhe, Germany.

1972 CO B, relocated to Wharton Barracks, Heilbronn, Germany.

July 15, 1976 385th was reassigned to VII Corps.

October 21, 1977 CO’s A, B, and C were inactivated.
Restructured

In June 1991, the 385th MP BN consisted of the 194th , 204th , 300th , 595th , 615th , 630th , and 981st MP Company’s.

385th MP BN was inactivated June 15, 1993, in Germany.
-
Reactivated April 17, 2006 Fort Stewart, Georgia, with an HHD, along with the 293rd, 546th, and 549th MP Companies .

Attached to Commander 3D Infantry Division as a Separate Battalion without a Brigade higher (admin attachment to Commander USAG)
